In this article, you will learn what merge tags are and how to use them for your personalized emails.
Note that Chamaileon email builder does not provide merge tags on its own, all merge tags are synced or set up for an ESP/CRM/MAP or other email sending solution – custom setup works as well.
What are merge tags
In any email service providers (ESP), you have a list with your subscribers which you previously collected with a signup form or other means.
The information you collected is saved in an audience field and tied to a unique label, called a merge tag. You can use merge tags to insert personalized or dynamic content from your audience into the campaigns you send.
Your audience contains audience fields that refer to your contact's information. Each audience field corresponds to a unique merge tag, which looks like a snippet of text wrapped in special characters, for example, in MailChimp: *|EXAMPLE|*
. When you insert a merge tag into your campaign, your email service provider (ESP) replaces the tag with the content stored in the corresponding audience field.
How to add merge tags in Chamileon
You can access merge tags on the Workspace settings page under the "Customization" tab.
Click Add New and choose from the two options:
Pre-defined Merge tag sets for most of the ESP/CRM systems that are integrated with Chamaileon
Custom Merge tag Set
Option one is extremely convenient.
Make sure to check the tags in your email service provider account because they might also have updated tags when choosing pre-defined sets.
After adding a new set, you can edit your email designs in the Email builder, and within the text editor, a dropdown will appear for each set that you created.
For example, if you need to add your customer's first name to your email (Hello John), then you probably want to see a merge tag labeled "First Name" when you're editing the text, and if you click on it, the editor will insert *|FNAME|* as you can see from the screenshot below.
