In this article, you will learn what are merge tags and how to use them for your personalized emails.

In Chamaileon, you can design highly responsive email templates, but you can send them with your email service provider such as (Constant Contact, Campaign Monitor, Mailchimp, etc). In those email service providers, you have a list with your subscribers which you previously collected with a signup form. 

The information you collect through your signup form is saved in an audience field and tied to a unique label, called a merge tag. You can use merge tags to insert personalized or dynamic content from your audience into the campaigns you send.

Your audience contains audience fields that refer to your contact's information. Each audience field corresponds to a unique merge tag, which looks like a snippet of text wrapped in special characters: *|EXAMPLE|*. When you insert a merge tag into your campaign, your email service provider (ESP) replaces the tag with the content stored in the corresponding audience field.

You can access merge tags on the Workspace settings page.

Then under ''Merge tags'' click ''Add group''.

You can create groups (like an ESP specific group that you can name MailChimp, but if you need to structure your merge tags in other ways, you can do that with groups).

After that, you need to click ''Add tag'' to that group. You can have multiple tags within that group (for example tag for first name, tag for last name, tag for a phone number, etc).

If you add a merge tag to a group, you need to label it and add what its value will be.

For example, if you want to easily paste your contact's first name to your email, you need to add a merge tag with label "First Name" and add a replacer with the tag of your email service provider, in this case, for example, Mailchimp, uses tag *|FNAME|*.

Make sure to check the tags in your email service provider account because they have different tags.

We have added default tags too with already inserted labels and appropriate tags for some email service provider. You can see o the list below.

After that, you can edit your email's text in the editor, and a dropdown will appear for each group that you created, and when clicking on that you can select what merge tag you want to add to the text.

For example, if you need to add your customer's first name to your email (Hello John), then you probably want to see a merge tag labeled "First Name" when you're editing the text, and if you click on it, the editor will insert *|FNAME|* as you can see from the screenshot below.
