Why a new Editor (3.0) version again?

As WFH and remote jobs emerged as the new normal nowadays, our toolset must be adapted.

Real-time chat, real-time video conferencing and real-time document editing are not enough anymore you need real-time design editors also.

What is new in the email editor?

  • Enables you real-time editing - It means that you can create email designs together, simultaneously, seeing each other’s edits. You will be able to see your colleague adjusting padding while you switch colors, replace images and someone else edits text. That’s vital when you have to build email campaigns together from scratch in hours.
  • Spacing element - It’s a vertical divider/spacer element between 2 columns. You can create sophisticated positioning without complex paddings & margins.
  • Better background support - you can apply background image/color to literally any element.
  • Breadcrumb menu - email structure inspector instead of the static Tree-view.
  • Customizable HTML output - VML (Outlook) button, etc.
  • New code format for emails that enables cool features in the near future
  • Merge tags feature added

Enables you to edit emails in real-time

The real-time editor enables real-time collaborative or live editing in the same workspace, in the same email template – at the same time by different users with the automatic and nearly instantaneous merging of their edits.

Real-time presence helps you see where your colleagues are working in the email so that you don’t create conflicts as you edit. This new feature will allow you to see changes to text and formatting as they happen will help you and your colleagues stay on the same page.

The productivity advantages for real-time editing are significant:

  • no more endless changes as emails get sent to the whole team over and over
  • no more miscommunications about who edited which parts of the email
  • long discussions on what changes should be made

Here is how to use the real-time editor:

When you enter the email editor at the same time as another member of your workspace, you will see in the right upper hand-corner which users are editing.

When a user enters the email in the editing mode, you will see a colour around the user logo in the upper right hand corner. For example, you can see that one user has a blue colour and that will be the editing colour of that particular user inside the editor.

The other users will have different colours around the logo and the editor so you can differentiate which user is editing which parts of the email.

Check out our preview on how it works.

Note: This feature is available in the ''Team plan''.

Spacing element

Now you can add spacing to your 2 columns elements. You can create sophisticated positioning without complex paddings & margins. Click on the column and you can adjust it in the left side of your editor in the toolbox.

Breadcrumbs instead of old tree-view

Email structure inspector is now added instead of the static Tree-view.

Customizable HTML output

To access it, click on the three dots on the email card in your email dashboard and choose ''Email properties''.

Here you have options to switch on and off.

Merge tags feature added

In Chamaileon, you can design highly responsive email templates, but you can send them with your email service provider such as (Constant Contact, Campaign Monitor, Mailchimp, etc). In those email service providers, you have a list with your subscribers which you previously collected with a signup form.

The information you collect through your signup form is saved in an audience field and tied to a unique label, called a merge tag. You can use merge tags to insert personalized or dynamic content from your audience into the campaigns you send.

Your audience contains audience fields that refer to your contact's information. Each audience field corresponds to a unique merge tag, which looks like a snippet of text wrapped in special characters: *|EXAMPLE|*. When you insert a merge tag into your campaign, your email service provider (ESP) replace the tag with the content stored in the corresponding audience field.

How to add merge tags in Chamileon

You can access merge tags on the Workspace settings page.

Then under ''Merge tags'' click ''Add group''.

You can create groups (like an ESP specific group that you can name MailChimp, but if you need to structure your merge tags in other ways, you can do that with groups).

After that you need to click ''Add tag'' to that group. You can have multiple tags within that group (for example tag for first name, tag for last name, tag for phone number, etc).

If you add a merge tag to a group, you need to label it and add what its value will be.

For example, if you want to easily paste your contact's first name to your email, you need to add a merge tag with label "First Name" and add a replacer with the tag of your email service provider, in this case for example Mailchimp, uses tag *|FNAME|*.

Make sure to check the tags in your email service provider account because they have different tags.

We have added default tags too with already inserted labels and appropriate tags for some email service provider. You can see o the list below.

After that, you can edit your email's text in the editor, and a dropdown will appear for each group that you created, and when clicking on that you can select what merge tag you want to add to the text.

For example, if you need to add your customer's first name to your email (Hello John), then you probably want to see a merge tag labeled "First Name" when you're editing the text, and if you click on it, the editor will insert *|FNAME|* as you can see from the screenshot below.

Does it affect something in my emails?

No, we have automatically converted all your emails to the new editor’s code format. There is an option to recover the original email format versions. But only use it if you experience any flaws.

Please let us know if you experience any problem.
